Outwoods Development

This landmark and innovative health village complex, to be built on the Outwoods site next to Queen's Hospital in Belvedere Road, Burton, is currently scheduled to provide a range of GP and community services for local patients, extra care and residential care facilities, a step-down unit to mitigate delayed discharges, key worker accommodation and a nursery. The health village also benefits from the inclusion of a central community hub that will support greater integration between the users of the various facilities and the local community.

A top priority of the Staffordshire and Stoke-on Trent STP, an important milestones was reached with the submission of outline planning in February 2018 and work is progressing towards a start on site early in 2020 which includes key enabling works such as a multi-storey car park. As development partners for STRIDE, Morgan Sindall Investments’ health brand Community Solutions offered the concept of a health village as an innovative alternative to selling the land for residential housing.

Commenting for the Trust, Chief Executive Officer, Helen Scott-South, said “We have long recognised the need to ensure services in the community, including GP services, are better integrated into the services we provide at Queen’s. The development proposed, in lieu of a standard housing development, enables a greater focus for the community in providing more seamless care. We are also conscious, as outlined in the Naylor Report published earlier in the year, that the NHS has to make better use of its surplus land and we are delighted that our partners in STRIDE have put forward this exciting development.

STRIDE Director, Peter Cox also added, “After several months engaging the local health community we have developed a concept design for the Trust that has given them the opportunity to significantly add greater value in both health outcomes for the local population and a greater financial gain for the Trust. This opportunity draws on our wider property development skill set as well as our experience in the health sector developing health facilities”.
